Mastic oil is the essential oil extracted from the distillation of natural mastic. The yield of mastic oil varies from 1%-3% depending on the quality of the mastic. Mastic oil with the Chios Mastic Producers Association's mark is pure and unadulterated, guaranteed as genuine mastic distillate. It was first produced in Germany, in the city of Braunschweig, by dry distillation. In 1573 it became known in pharmacist circles in Berlin and later in 1580 in the 'Augustinian Pharmacopoeia' (Pharmacopoea Augustiana).
