Mastic is a liquid resin derived from the mastic bush. Mastic has long been used in the production of lacquer[1] and in medicine. Dried mastic has been chewed since the time of Theophrastus (around 300 BC) to clean teeth and freshen breath, and generally in antiquity as a kind of chewing gum[1].
Mastic is also used as a glue in film, theater and live role-playing. It can be used to attach latex mask parts and artificial beards to the skin. Mastic can also be used to create the illusion of scars and wrinkles. Mastic is removed from the skin with lukewarm water or special solvents. Mastic is sold by most theatrical make-up producers and comes in many package sizes.
Mastic is used - together with salep - in some Turkish ice cream to make it chewy.[2]
The mastic tree grows on the Greek island of Chios, among other places.
